Birds fascenate us with their beauty. What other creature combines the appeal of music, of colour, and of the possibilities for survival?

World wide, few images are more closely linked with the First Nations of North American than isthe Bison. But Bisons (Buffalo)were really animals associated with the Great Plains. It was there, more than any where else, that the Biso became central to the very existance of human life.

The Nations of the Great Planes and of the Southwest have held Coyote with special regard. Like Raven of the Northwest, Coyote is typically seen as a trickster. Coyote is also responsible for testing the limits of what can be done, and for the salvation of the people themselves.

Just as the Plains Nations depended upon the bison, the traditional Nations of the Northern Woodlands, such as the Ojibwa and the Cree, depended upon Deer, Moose, and Caribou for their survival. The image of the deer is as common in Woodland art as the bison is in the art of the Plains

Humans have depended upon fish for much of our existence. Respect for the fish is taught around the poles and on every continent.

Frogs mean different things to different peoples. In the Northwest, they are seen as guardians of all that is below the water and above the ground. In much of the Southwest, they are sacred water animals associated with fertility.
