Lakota

The Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota are the three linguistically linked nations that traditionally have been called “The Sioux.” They were among the great bison-hunting cultures of the Great Plains. They resisted the intrusion of the United States government and of settlers onto their lands. Along with the Crow, the Cheyenne, and several other nations, they defeated General Custer at the battle of the Little Big Horn. To the non-Lakotan, their most recognizable leader was Sitting Bull. The Sioux are also well known as the victims of the Wounded Knee massacre.

Among collectors of traditional ethnic art, the Lakota are well known for bead work, paintings (especially on hide and ledger paper), carvings, clothing, and headdresses.
