Print Makers

The works presented here are PRINTS, and not reproductions. There is a big distinction.

Prints, in the strict sense, are original art works made for that specific medium. Etchings, wood cuts, lithographs, and Giclee prints are among the better known types of this art form. Prints can be made in limited editions, as unique works (monprints), or as open editions.

Reproductions are copies of a work that originated in another medium. For example, if you buy a copy of vanGogh's Sunflowers, or Rembrant's Night Watch, you are buying a reproduction. Reproductions can also be made in open, limited, or mono editions. However, the reproduction is not a true print. That term should be used only when the work is originial to the medium.

Prairie House Gallery uses this strict and formal distiction at all times. When you buy a print from us, you can be certain that it was produced specifically for that medium. Reproductions may also be excellent and collectable pieces of art work. However, we believe that we have an ethical responsibility to maintain this distinction. You should know which one you are buying. Reproductions, when we carry them, will be listed separeately.
