Mata Ortiz Copper & White Mother of Pearl Calvary Cross
SKU
MO-012
Mata Ortiz Copper Calvary Cross with White Shell (Mother of Pearl). The cross contains the images of the crucifixion of Christ. The large center cross is elevated on a mound (the white mother of pearl stone). Generally, Calvary crosses also show the two crosses representing the crucified thieves.
In this unusual piece, there are two circles on either side of the mound, representing Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of Christ, who remained at the foot of the cross. If the mound is reinterpreted as a person, the full triad becomes present.
The unusual artistic vision of Samwell also shows in this cross. The curved figures leading to calvary (in two sets of three), and the elevation of the cross above stone, combine elements of the resurrection cross, foreshadowing the next stage in the saga of death and resurrection that is central to Christianity. The repeated pattern of triads on the cross link this theme to the concept of trinity, another theme through much of Christianity.
Mata Ortiz is a Mexican Pueblo community in the region of Copper Canyon. The community has recently revived its tradition of jewelry making. These early productions from the Pueblo are done in copper. The silver solder found on some crosses marks a transition as the artisans begin to work in silver. The artist, Samwell, shows the use of silver solder in his current works.
