Hand Beaded Barrette

Northern Cheyenne

Prairie House Gallery ™ acquired this 3.5" long hair barrette in the Northern Cheyenne Nation in the summer of 2006. The piece is unsigned, but the wonderful proprietress at Custer's Last Camp, a local general store and camp site in Busby MT, told me that it was made by a friend of hers.

This beautiful barrette has a traditional Cheyenne “shield” design.

Several Native American/First Nations are noted for exquisite bead work. The woodland nations, such as the Ojibwa and Cree traditionally portrayed flowers in their designs. Plains nations, such as the Cheyenne, Crow, and Lakota, tended to use more geometric patterns.

Both glass and plastic beads are used today. Glass has the advantage of being shiny, and appealing to European aesthetics (i.e., they sell better). Plastic beads are more durable, and they do not cut their supporting strings as easily. The artist chose plastic beads for this Barrette.
